Although temperatures are still high it’s time to think about making a start on sowing some vegetables seeds in seedling trays to ensure a winter harvest.Mid to late summer is generally known as the intermediate to cool season and varieties of edibles thrive during this time.
Naturally, the seeds will need to be kept moist, not wet until the seedlings are ready to plant out in the early autumn, preferably in prepared raised beds or vegetable plots. Before sowing any seeds it’s important to check sowing instructions on the seed packet.
Cauliflowers are ideal to sow mid-summer to autumn. There is quite a range of different types to choose from so make sure you choose the right cultivar to suit you.
Cabbage seeds are very reliable intermediate to cool season edibles to sow, though some varieties can be planted anytime during the year.
Delicious broad beans can be sown now. Always very popular, they are a welcome veggie when cooler weather arrives!
Celery and celeriac are both intermediate to cool crops and celery really adds flavour to a casserole.
A mainstay to sow are carrots, another edible that can be planted throughout the year, but are best sown late summer to early winter.
Broccoli seeds sown now will produce abundant, succulent stems for weeks once the seedlings are planted out.
Brussel sprouts are a very nutritious vegetable, although not popular with everyone! Seeds sown now and planted out in autumn will provide many tasty meals during the cooler weather.
Beetroot seeds are best started in trays and the seedlings planted out in rows. Beetroot can be eaten when quite young and sweet, or left to mature
If your vegetable plot is small to medium its a good idea to plant out the seedlings in small blocks, rather than the traditional long rows, as this will save space for other suitable edibles.
