🌸 Wildflowers are important!
South Africa has some amazing and beautiful wild flowers that aren’t just lovely to look at, they actually play an important role in the environment, helping to keep the soil healthy and providing pollination sources for wildlife, so it’s essential that wildflowers are protected and preserved whether on grass verges in urban areas or out in the open countryside. Roots of wildflowers help to stabilise the soil and retain natural nutrients, improving soil health and preventing erosion.
🐝 Supporting Pollinators and Wildlife
Wildflowers also play a large part providing bees, butterflies and other pollinators with valuable food sources throughout the seasons. Pollinators then go on to pollinate vegetables and fruits, ensuring a good healthy crop for both farmers and gardeners alike, helping to combat damage by crop and plant pests without the use of chemicals. In Winter, wildflowers are an essential source of food for birds and small mammals who dine on the seeds.
🌱 Creating Your Own Wildflower Patch
By dedicating a small area, or even landscaping an extension in a large garden to a wildflower meadow or patch, gardeners can make a real difference to the environment. Seeds are best purchased from specialist wildflower seed providers who can give advice on suitable varieties. Wildflowers do not need fertiliser and thrive on poor soil, so once an area has been cleared and any weeds removed, rake the area smooth then scatter the selected wildflower seeds by hand, rake in carefully, then water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist until the seeds have germinated. Deadhead flowers as they fade to prolong flowers then, at the end of the season leave the plants to self-seed. Remove any unwanted weeds as they will soon take over!
🌼 A Natural, Sustainable Garden
Once established the wildflower patch or meadow will need little maintenance and provide a natural, sustainable environment for wildlife for years to come.
