Gardening Jobs to Keep You Busy in May

Gardening jobs for May: prune, plant, mulch and plan your garden for winter and spring while enjoying fresh air and outdoor activity.

🌿 Gardening Jobs to Keep You Busy in May

There’s plenty to do in the garden now to prepare for the Winter season. Gardening will help you keep occupied in a productive and positive way, getting you outdoors to enjoy some fresh air and exercise!

✂️ Pruning Trees, Shrubs and Roses

Tree, shrubs and roses will benefit from pruning now during the cooler months of the year, but remember to leave shrubs with berries for the birds. Established apple and pear trees can be pruned to allow air to circulate. Remove any branches that are growing across an existing branch. Prune roses to about half their size and burn any fallen leaves from the rose shrub to avoid and protect against fungal diseases. Deciduous shrubs can be pruned to a manageable size and shape, evergreen shrubs should be left until Spring to be pruned. Also, mulch around all shrubs and trees after pruning as this will ensure plenty of lush new growth in Spring. Always keep the mulch away from the tree trunk and shrub stem as it could cause rotting.

🌱 Moving and Soil Preparation

If you have any shrubs that need to be moved now is the time to do it, especially deciduous varietes.

Any bare soil can be dug over lightly and compost, manure or leaf mould dug in to prepare the soil for Spring planting.

🪴 Garden Planning and Ideas

Take time to have a stroll around your garden and plan any changes or improvements could be made in the general layout. Maybe replacing a lawn, designing a woodland corner, brighten up a shady spot, seating areas or even a low-maintenance gravel garden. Consider how you use your outside space, for entertaining, a quiet haven, maybe a new vegetable plot, the options are endless. Plan a project, choosing the style and plants that will suit you and your family.
