No-Dig Gardening: Let Your Soil Work Its Magic

Discover the benefits of no-dig gardening and learn how leaving your soil undisturbed can create healthier plants, fewer weeds and richer soil.

What Is No-Dig Gardening?

No-dig gardening is all about growing healthy organic plants in soil that has been left undisturbed as much as possible, allowing soil life to flourish and plants to thrive.

The Benefits of No-Dig Gardening

Among the advantages of no-dig is no backbreaking digging, less weeds and a rich, crumbly soil without any compaction.

Why Digging Damages Soil Life

By digging the soil the thriving ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, insects and worms, all of which are vitally important in keeping the soil healthy and fertile, is destroyed. Digging also releases weed seeds which then germinate, although some weeds are blown onto the plot by wind.

No-Dig Vegetable Gardens and Flower Borders

No-dig plots are generally used for vegetables, producing bigger harvests than dug beds owing to the amount of organic composition in the soil. Flower borders will also benefit from the no-dig method, although if there are established perennials which cannot be moved then a thick layer of organic mulch around each plant will soon be broken down into the soil by the worms creating nutrient-rich water-retaining soil.

How to Create a No-Dig Garden

No-dig gardens can be in raised beds, directly onto the soil or on grass. Select an area that you can access from all sides to avoid walking on the soil. Cover the plot with a layer of wet cardboard or newspaper. This will suppress weeds and grass. Follow this with a thick layer (15 -20cm) of well-rotted manure, compost or lawn clippings, topping with a light much of straw or leaves. This organic matter is slowly broken down and released into the soil, establishing a rich, healthy ecosystem.

How No-Dig Gardening Helps Retain Moisture

Moisture is retained as both the organic compost in the soil and the channels created by hard-working earthworms enables water and air to penetrate the soil.
