🌿 Colour for a Winter Garden
During the cooler months the garden can look forgotten and unloved, but, by planning and planting a few shrubs and perennials now while their roots are still growing you will get to enjoy some colour through Winter plus a head start on Spring displays in the garden.
🌱 Soil Preparation
As Summer flowers fade begin preparing your soil, After removing any weeds, lightly dig it over and add plenty of compost mixed with some bonemeal to give the soil a much-needed boost.
🌺 Winter Colour Highlights
Strelitzia, known as the Crane flower, with its orange and blue petals will provide eye-popping colour over the Winter months.
Aloe (Malawi) has bright red flowers all through Winter, attracting birds who adore them. Used as a feature plant the Aloe is stunning.
The Confetti Bush (Coleonema) has green or gold foliage and the flowers, in pink or white, have a gorgeous fragrance from Winter to early Summer.
Proteas and Pincushions are very attractive to nectar-feeding birds who love their Winter flowers.
Red Hot Pokers (kniphofia Praecox) are magnificently bold with their tall, upright spikes of brightly coloured tubular flowers in red, orange or yellow.
Clivia (Clivia Miniata) produces lovely orange/red blooms mid-Winter to Spring. They prefer a semi-shaded position.
Camellia Japonica is one of the hardiest shrubs to grow in Winter with its glossy evergreen leaves. The choice of beautiful flowers varies from white, pink or red.
Hellebores (Hellebore Orientalis) begin flowering in early Winter in a choice of pink, purple or white blooms. Very reliable, Hellebores will happily grow in shade and semi-shade.
Buddleja Auriculata (Weeping Sage) is a lovely indigenous shrub with scented clusters of orange or lilac flowers that smell divine, much loved by insects and butterflies. A good hard pruning after flowering helps to restrict its size.
Osteopermum Ecklonis is a fantastic indigenous perennial that will bloom in a wide variety of colours all through Autumn, Winter and into Spring.
Antirrhinums (Snapdragons) will bring masses of colour if planted together in the Winter garden border.
