Time to plant Spring-flowering bulbs

Plant spring bulbs in autumn for vibrant flowers next season. Tips on soil prep, planting depth, and beautiful indigenous bulbs for your garden.

🌷 Plan Now for a Colourful Spring Display

Start planning now for a fabulous display of colourful flowers next Spring. Autumn is the perfect time to plant Spring flowering bulbs so they have time to develop strong roots and establish themselves before the Winter season. Bulbs should be planted once the soil has cooled as they won’t thrive in heat. They can be planted in containers on the patio or into flower borders. It’s important to check the depth required for different varieties before planting out. Bulbs planted in groups will produce the most impact, and remember to mark where you have planted the bulbs to avoid digging them up accidentally! Once planted the bulbs will need a little watering to ensure the bulb has enough moisture to put out its root system. Container bulbs should ideally be in a semi-shaded position to avoid the soil drying out too quickly.

🌱 Preparing the Soil for Bulbs

Before planting bulbs aerate the soil by digging it over and then adding some compost and fertiliser, allowing at least a week for the fertiliser to be absorbed before any planting.

🌸 Beautiful Indigenous Spring Bulbs

There are some beautiful indigenous Spring-flowering bulbs available, such as Freesia, Sparaxis (Harlequin flower), Babianas (Baboon flower), Ixia (African corn lily), Tritonia, Ornithogalum and Lachenalia (Cape cowslip), which will all make a fabulous display.

🌼 Anemones for Containers

Anemones (Wind flowers) are either double-flowering (St Brigid) or single flowered (De Caen) both varieties in colours of white, pink, purple and red. Ideal bulbs for containers.

💜 Easy to Grow Dutch Iris

Dutch Iris is very easy to grow with its dramatic, eye-catching colours of deep purple, yellow and a paler purple.

🌼 The Ever Popular Daffodil

As ever, the ever popular Daffodil/Narcissus, always a welcome sight in Spring, will look delightful whether planted in borders or containers.

🌿 After Flowering Care

After flowering, allow the green growth to die back naturally so the energy goes back into the bulb, ready for next year’s flowering.

🌺 Enjoy the Rewards Next Spring

Planning ahead now will be worth it next Spring when your garden comes alive with colour!
