Why Roses are Essential in Any Garden

No garden is complete without at least one rose plant, whether it’s a shrub, a climber, or a groundcover variety. Roses can look stunning in a cottage-style garden, a formal setting, patio, or balcony.

Planting Roses: Best Practices

May to June is the best time to plant a rose, in a sunny position that has at least 6 hours of sunshine a day. A good deep watering once a week is essential for their growth. Roses prefer clay soil with some organic compost added to the planting hole. If the soil is sandy, adding plenty of compost helps retain moisture. Remember, a thick mulch around the base of the plant will keep the soil from drying out, but ensure the mulch is not too close to the stem.

Nurturing Roses for Optimal Growth

Top tip – when planting a rose, pop a banana into the bottom of the planting hole. Bananas contain potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, all valuable nutrients for strong, healthy growth. Banana skins also make good fertilizer for roses. Soak the skin in water for a few days, remove it, dilute the remaining fluid, and spray it on the rose. Additionally, planting Fennel near the rose will help deter aphids from attacking the shrub. Protect roses during the growing season against spider mites by spraying the underside of the leaves with a strong jet of water every 2/3 days.

Choosing the Right Roses for Your Space

Small garden spaces will look gorgeous with climbing roses like ‘Iceberg’ or ‘Joseph’s Coat’. For borders, consider ‘Katy’s’, ‘Vanilla Whiz’, or ‘Ocarina’. Floribunda roses, which have several blooms on single stems, look fabulous when planted in groups. Consider ‘Bright Smile’, ‘Playgirl’, or ‘Carefree Wonder’. For water-wise options, shrub roses with single blooms that cope with less water are ‘Double Delight’, ‘Peace’, and ‘Ingrid Bergman’. For ground cover over hot, dry soil, try ‘Pink Sensation’, ‘Waterwise Blush’, or ‘Memory Bells’.

Summary

Roses add a touch of elegance and beauty to any garden, be it small or large, formal or informal. To ensure their optimal growth, plant them in sunny spots with well-draining soil and provide regular deep watering. Supplement their growth with natural fertilizers like banana skins and companion planting with herbs like Fennel. With the right care, roses will flourish, bringing joy and color to your outdoor space throughout the growing season.
