Extend Your Garden’s Vibrancy Into Autumn with These Flowering Plants

With the temperatures starting to cool, the garden starts to wind down, and the transition begins into late Summer and early Autumn. However, there is still some life left in the garden, and by planting a few flowering plants now, you can keep the outside space looking colourful and vibrant well into Autumn and early Winter.

Top Flowering Plants for Late Summer and Autumn

Gaillardias (Blanket flower) is a prolific bloomer from Spring into Autumn and beyond. This gorgeous, vibrant plant is available in a choice of dazzling red, orange, and yellow shades that will shine in any garden border.

A very reliable and popular flowering plant is the Japanese Anemone, guaranteed to make a fantastic display in late Summer through to Autumn with varied colours of pink, mauve, or white blooms and attractive foliage.

Echinacea Purpurea (Purple Coneflower) has an abundance of mauve/pink coloured flowers with unusual orange-tipped central cones. This plant will flower from Summer to Autumn.

A pretty edge-of-border plant is the Erigeron Karvinskianus, which is ideal as a groundcover plant for filling any bare soil between plants. It flowers from Summer to Autumn with small, dainty white daisy blooms and bright yellow centres.

A larger daisy variety plant is the Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum), which is a stalwart for the back of the border and flowers from Summer to Autumn. It has large white flowers with bright yellow centres and contrasts well with the more colourful plants in the border.

For a real statement plant, choose Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia), a vibrant addition when the blooms of red, orange, and yellow are displayed in Autumn.

Another large showy plant is Agapanthus, with its balls of blue or white flowers that will make a fabulous display in late Summer. Agapanthus also thrives when planted in a container, as they like their roots restricted.

Drought-tolerant Penstemons are hardy plants, blooming continually from Spring to Autumn in a choice of red, purple, white, or pink flowers. Another lovely, reliable perennial to bring life to the Autumn garden.
