SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Meet the Delightful Dierama

Commonly known as the Angel’s Fishing Rod, Dierama pendulum is one of the most exceptionally graceful plants you can introduce to a premium garden. Originating from the grassy hillsides of South Africa, these evergreen perennials form dense clumps of narrow, grass-like foliage from which rise extraordinarily slender, arching stems.
During mid-summer, these wiry stems bear delicate, bell-shaped pink and purple flowers that dangle elegantly in the softest breeze. Perfect for adding movement, height, and a touch of romantic drama to gravel gardens or sunny botanical borders.

Growing Conditions

To coax the elegant, arching stems of Dierama pendulum (commonly known as Angel’s Fishing Rod) into their full, cascading glory, replication of their native South African mountain climate is key. These majestic perennials demand a sun-drenched, open position where their delicate pink and purple bells can sway freely in the breeze.

Soil composition is equally critical. They thrive in rich, highly permeable, well-drained soil. A gravel border or scree garden serves as the perfect canvas, preventing winter wetness from rotting the corms while offering a striking, minimal backdrop that emphasizes their airy architectural form.

Propagation & Maintenance

Although it’s preferable not to disturb the clumps too often, as this can affect next seasons flowering, once well established Dieramas can be propagated by lifting and dividing the clump. The replanted clumps will take time to settle and flower again.

If Dierama Pendulum becomes untidy resist the urge to cut the foliage back as this will retard the plants growth. The best way to remove any dead brown leaves is to gently ‘comb’ through the clump with your fingers.
