🌸 Captivating Hellebores
Also known as the Lenton Rose, Hellebores add some welcome colour to the garden from mid-Winter to Spring. They are perennial, evergreen, drought-tolerant and very easy to grow. Plus being a real bee magnet!
🌿 Growing Conditions
Hellebores will grow in semi-shade or dappled sun and like a well-drained soil with plenty of organic compost added. They will self-seed randomly so if you fancy some Hellebores in a different area of the garden, the seed can be collected and sown to create another colourful patch. Replanted seeds will take approximately 9weeks to germinate.
💧 Care Tips
Keep the roots of the plant moist, but not wet. Hellebores dislike being water logged, and by adding a layer of mulch with regular feeds of fertiliser you will be rewarded with a fabulous display of blooms.

🌼 Flower & Foliage Features
Hellebores will grow to around 50cm high with delicate bowl-shaped flowers that range in colours from deep purple, reds, and pinks to green, yellow, cream and white. The short-stemmed large deep green leaves are star-shaped, and old leaves should be removed when the plant is dormant to avoid fungus forming and to make the flowers more accessible to pollinating insects.
🌱 Moving & Dividing
Hellebores aren’t keen on being moved once established, although if they become overcrowded they can be lifted and divided very carefully.
🌺 Popular Varieties to Try
Some popular varieties of Hellebores to try are :-
Bears Foot (H. Foetidus), which will eventually grow to 60/80 cm in height with yellow/green blooms and a gentle fragrance. An excellent choice for dry shade.
The Christmas Rose (H. Niger); so-called as it usually flowers at Christmas time, and has pure white flowers, growing to 50cm.
The Lenten Rose (H. Orientalis) has large , drooping flowers available in colours of white, pink, rose purple and green. This variety will grow to approximately 50cm.
