Introduction to Hellebores

From mid-winter until spring, Hellebores, also known as the Lenten Rose, lift the garden with a variety of beautifully colored blooms. These flowers are a real magnet for bees and butterflies. The foliage is evergreen, featuring large, short-stemmed, deep green leaves. Hellebores are perennials, drought-resistant, and very easy to grow, requiring low maintenance.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Hellebores are clump-forming and thrive in well-drained soil, preferably rich loamy soil. However, they will adapt to most soil types. Adding a slow-release organic fertilizer each autumn ensures gorgeous flowers and healthy foliage. Hellebores grow well in dappled or semi-shaded areas, needing some protection from strong winds.

Plant Maintenance and Propagation

Once established, Hellebores are not keen on being moved. If they become overcrowded, they can be lifted and divided in spring or autumn. Hellebores will self-seed and can be propagated by collecting the large seed pods when the flowers die back. Be very careful when collecting the seeds as they can be poisonous to cats and dogs.

Growth and Bloom Characteristics

Hellebores grow to approximately 50 cm in height. The flowers have delicate, bowl-shaped blooms that range in color from deep purple, red, and pink to yellow, cream, green, and white. These flowers bloom for around three months and gradually change color after pollination.

Popular Varieties

There is a large choice of Hellebores available, with popular varieties including:

  • Bears Foot (Helleborus Foetidus):

    • This variety grows to around 60-80 cm in height with yellow-green blooms and a gentle fragrance. It is an excellent choice for a dry, semi-shaded area.

  • The Lenten Rose (Helleborus Orientalis):

    • Known for its large, drooping flowers of white, rose/purple, or green, this variety grows to approximately 50 cm.

  • The Christmas Rose (Helleborus Niger):

    • This variety has pure white flowers and generally blooms at Christmas, hence the name.
